3rd ACCESS Industrial Workshop 2013

Opportunities and Risks in a Connected World

Welcome to the 3rd ACCESS Industrial Workshop; this time jointly organized with the IEEE Sweden Joint Vehicular Technology, Communications, and Information Theory Chapter.

Within the past two decades wireless and mobile communication networks have been expanding at a breath-taking pace. Together with more recent progress on wireless sensor, actuator and control technologies a new vision of an interconnected world is within reach. Worldwide research efforts are now directed towards smart energy grids, smart buildings, intelligent transportation systems, process and automation industries, e-health, as well as surveillance, monitoring and early-warning systems. The benefits and opportunities are clear, although coming at a cost of increasing risks in terms of security and reliability.

At the workshop local and international experts will present state-of-the-art technology, recent progress, and current challenges within applications such as smart energy grids, and intelligent transportation systems.

Confirmed international keynote speakers are: Paul Alexander, CTO of Cohda Wireless talking about 5.9 GHz Car-2-Car Communications and Prof. John Baras, University of Maryland and the founding director of the world renowned Institute for Systems Research (ISR) talking about smart grids. Furthermore leading experts from Ericsson, ABB, and the ACCESS Linnaeus Center provide overview presentations of ongoing research activities

The workshop therefore offers a unique opportunity to learn and discuss about research challenges and industry trends in security and reliability of large-scale critical systems.

ACCESS is a Linnaeus Centre established at KTH in 2006 through a ten-year grant from the Swedish Research Council. The Centre comprises a substantial part of the fundamental research on complex communication networks and systems in Sweden. 60 faculty members and postdocs and 100 PhD students are engaged with research and education at the Centre. ACCESS annual turnover is EUR 10 million making it one of northern Europe’s largest research centres for future networked systems. Researchers within the centre come together from eight departments at three KTH Schools.
